There's A Fine Line Between Fearlessness And Stupidity

If you are still pondering my last post means to you,"Don't Save Your Best Stuff For Last", let me take a minute to clarify what it doesn't mean.

There is truly a fine line between fearlessness and stupidity.

Which do you think it is?  What about the guy in the back seat?

A Whack On The Side Of The Head

If you’ve read my profile you know that I spent 28 years in the corporate world (gasp).  What I learned today was that I’m still suffering from a little corporate hangover.  Yup…old corporate habits continue to infiltrate my thinking, even though I’ve been out for over 3 years now!  It’s time for a change!

As much as I loved the company and the people who made it great, it was never OK to show the spiritual woman within me.  Especially when my version of spirituality wasn’t labeled by a specific religion.  I simply protected her by hiding her away.

I put on a tough front.  A woman of power and accomplishment.  A woman who could play with the “good old boys” and I knew better than to affiliate with organizations just for women…or just for people who share my beliefs.

And then one day it ended.  Poof!  Just like that the corporate job was totally gone!

I’d been so used to hiding my true self that I didn’t realize she was still hidden away.  Even now that I’m my own boss, she was still hiding.

Today is a new day, and as of this day we will become one.  It’s time to let her be the core of the spirit that helps me do what I do best…helping others bring out the best in themselves.

What will be different?  Mainly my authenticity!  I will draw from ALL of me to help you become the best you can be. And…I’ll encourage you to be ALL that you can be!

It’s a delightful journey!  Thanks for coming along!

Let me ask you this...  What part of yourself are you compromising just to fit in?

Yes, I whacked myself on the side of the head today.  But it was inspired by my new friend Jodee Bock from “You Already Know This Stuff”.  Since this old dog is learning new tricks I thought you might like to know.

Can't VS Won't

If you don't read Seth Godin's blog, you're really missing out.  One of his posts today, "Can't  VS Won't", he really struck a chord with me.

In part he says, "Sometimes, precise language can change an organization.

How many times has a broker, or a clerk or a salesperson or some other intermediary (who was just a moment ago being quite helpful) turned to you and said, "I'm sorry, we can't do that."

In fact, the correct contraction in each case is "won't."

And once you say "won't" you realize exactly what you're doing.

You're telling a prospect (the most important person in your life, at least in this moment) that your organization doesn't want to accommodate them. Want being the key word."

***********************************************

He's right on with this post as with most.  If the company really wanted to take care of the customer...if the company really wanted to walk it's talk, they would.  They wouldn't be using some lame excuse about what they can't do.

Let me ask you this...In what situations do you find yourself using the excuse "we can't"?

What Good People Do To Bad Bosses

Life is way too short to put up with bad bosses.  Take a look at how one group of employees in Vancouver took matters into their own hands.  Right here!

Caution!  If you're sensitive to colorful language, don't read the comments section.

Let me ask you this...How do you handle bad bosses?

Godaddy Doesn't Get It

I would have never guessed that Godaddy would show up as a service rant here.  That was until I needed a little tech support for the first time.

For several days now I've been trying to map a new blog "Get Your Career In Gear" to a domain I registered with Godaddy a few months back.  I'm no geek, and that's probably part of the problem.  Typepad has done a pretty good job of detailing instructions, but I still haven't been successful.

This morning I decided to try to get help from Godaddy.  Here's the response I received:  "Unfortunately we cannot assist with this issue however, you will need to modify your Total DNS settings so the information below can be used to update the info needed."  The email went on to tell me how to access the DNS settings.

What kind of an answer is this?  Why can't they assist with the issue?  What needs to change in my DNS settings?  Now I have more questions than I did in the beginning!

Godaddy!  This is the first time I've tried to use your tech support...and this is your customer's first impression about the service you provide.  I've got to tell you...it's not good!

Unfortunately little issues like this are all too common in the world of customer service today.  One person decides to take the easy way out.  Doesn't take the time to help the customer.  And one customer at a time disappears.  They find a company that cares about doing business with them.

What do you think?  Am I missing something here?  Talk to me.

A Very Public Display Of Selfishness - Randall The Apprentice

If you've been following Donald Trump's show "The Apprentice", you've probably already heard about Randall's first big decision as the new Apprentice.  Trump offered to hire Rebecca (the first runner up) for another project he had in the works.  He left the final decision up to Randall, his new Apprentice.  Randall's response..."There is only ONE Apprentice Mr. Trump...".  From there he finished his denial by using some conjured up word he called the "Apprenti" (referring to more than one Apprentice).

Trump honored Randall's decision, but the internet continues to buzz about it.

Randall's first decision as the Apprentice ...a totally selfish move...and one he made publicly in front of the entire country.

It makes me wonder...if Randall will make such a selfish decision so early in the game, in what other circumstances will he choose selfishness over selflessness?  How might that impact the Trump organization?

Let me ask you this...what's your take on this?

When Smart People Do Dumb Things

When was the last time you heard about a group of 5 people getting fired?

No, they weren't stealing.  They weren't disclosing company secrets.  And they weren't even people who were dead on the job.  In fact, they were well respected professionals, long term employees, and people who added value to the company.

What happened?  It boils down to a plain case of poor judgment!  Officially, inappropriate use of email and the internet.  A bunch of guys all having a grand old time.  So much fun that they wasted a bunch of company time and ignored the company policy...and it cost them their long time jobs!

My questions are...What the heck were they thinking?   Was it worth it?

My point in sharing this...don't get caught in the same trap!  Know what your policies are.  Don't push the envelope!  Assume that every email you send through the corporate system can be tracked and printed...it can!

I'll bet it wasn't a pretty picture going home and trying to explain to their wives.

Before you think about forwarding that next joke to your buds, let me ask you this...

Just how funny is it?
